vulnerability.
A ranking House Republican yesterday demanded a hearing based on recent reports that Islamic terrorists embedded in the United States are teaming with Mexican drug cartels to fund terrorism networks overseas.
Rep. Ed Royce, ranking Republican on the House Foreign Affairs terrorism and nonproliferation subcommittee, said the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) document — first reported yesterday by The Washington Times — highlights how vulnerable the nation is when fighting the war on terrorism."I'll be asking the terrorism subcommittee to hold a hearing on the DEA report's disturbing findings," said Mr. Royce of California. "A flood of name changes from Arabic to Hispanic and the reported linking of drug cartels on the Texas border with Middle East terrorism needs to be thoroughly investigated."
Likewise, Rep. John Culberson, Texas Republican, said the DEA document revealed startling evidence that Islamic radicals are camouflaging themselves as Hispanics while conducting business with violent drug-trafficking organizations."I have been ringing the bell about this serious threat of Islamic individuals changing their surnames to Hispanic surnames for three to four years," Mr. Culberson said. "Unfortunately, Homeland Security's highest priority is to hide the truth from Congress and the public. I just hope we're not closing the barn door after terrorists have already made their way in."
Mr. Culberson, a member of the House Appropriations homeland security subcommittee, yesterday wrote a letter to the subcommittee's chairman, Rep. David E. Price, North Carolina Democrat, requesting a full investigation and hearing into the matter. A spokesman for Mr. Price said the committee is contacting the law-enforcement agencies and will work closely with Mr. Culberson's office on the matter."We certainly want to learn more about the matter from the agencies involved," said Paul Cox, press secretary to Mr. Price.
The 2005 DEA report outlines several incidents in which multiple Middle Eastern drug-trafficking and terrorist cells in the U.S. are funding terrorism networks overseas with the aid of Mexican cartels. These sleeper cells use established Mexican cartels with highly sophisticated trafficking routes to move narcotics — and other contraband — in and out of the United States, the report said.These "persons of interest" speak Arabic, Spanish and Hebrew fluently, according to the document.
The report includes photographs of known Middle Easterners who "appear to be Hispanic; they are in fact, all Spanish-speaking Arabic drug traffickers supporting Middle East terrorism from their base of operations" in the southwestern United States, according to the DEA.
Michael Maxwell, a senior analyst with the House Appropriations homeland security subcommittee, said that the report is evidence that terrorism cells exist in the U.S. and are being aided by dangerous narco-trafficking cartels
"While the procurement of fraudulent or multiple identities by terrorists to hide criminal activity is not new, the information suggests terrorist tradecraft is evolving and relationships now exist between Mexican and Middle Eastern individuals or groups, embedded here in the United States," he added.
The ties are as deep as family, according to the DEA report, which said that a Middle Eastern member of the Muslim Brotherhood, involved in narcotics sales and other crimes, married into a Mexican narcotics family.
"One of the targets of this investigation is an Arabic man," the document said.
A 2006 Department of Homeland Security intelligence report — also obtained by The Times — said that Al Qaeda has tried and is planning on using the Southwest border to enter the U.S
Mark Juergensmeyer, director of the Orfalea Center for Global & International Studies at the University of California at Santa Barbara and a terrorism specialist, said that links between terrorism and narcotics trafficking have been well-established in foreign nations, such as Afghanistan.
But Mr. Juergensmeyer said the DEA report linking terrorist organizations in the United States to Mexican drug cartels displays a new evolution in terrorist tactics and poses a serious concern in the area of security.
"In some ways, that's even more frightening to think that drug-trafficking organizations in Mexico may adopt some jihadist ideology," he said. "If it's an ideology being adopted by a drug culture then that makes this situation very dangerous."

That astonishing claim, by Mexican President Felipe Calderon, in his state of the nation address at the National Palace Sunday, brought his audience wildly cheering to its feet.
Were the United States a serious nation,
Calderon's claim that Mexico extends into
the United States would have produced an
instant demand from the U.S. ambassador for
clarification. Failing to receive it, he
would have packed his bags, and the United
States would be on the verge of severing
diplomatic relations.
In an earlier time, U.S. troops would be
rolling to the border
For this is not the first time an arrogant
Mexican ruler has made a claim to
extra-territorial rights inside the United
States and, indeed, to U.S. territory.
Mexico's presidents have gotten into a habit
of suborning treason against the United
States.
In 1995, President Ernesto Zedillo told a
Dallas audience of U.S. citizens of Mexican
descent, "You are Mexicans, Mexicans who
live north of the border." I.e., you owe
loyalty to Mexico, not Uncle Sam.
In 1997, Zedillo brought a Chicago gathering
of La Raza to its feet by exclaiming, "I
have proudly affirmed that the Mexican
nation extends beyond the territory enclosed
by its borders."
In 1998, Mexico changed its constitution to
restore citizenship to Mexican-Americans who
have taken an oath of allegiance to the
United States and renounced loyalty to any
other country.
Purpose: loosen their ties of loyalty to the
United States, re-knit their ties of loyalty
to Mexico, and persuade Mexican-Americans to
vote Mexico's interests in the U.S.A. Put
Mexico first, even if you have taken an oath
of allegiance to the United States.
In June 2004, President Vicente Fox took the
Zedillo road to the Mexican-American
community in Chicago. There, he, too,
declared: "We are Mexicans that live in our
territories, and we are Mexicans that live
in other territories. In reality, there are
120 million that live together and are
working together to construct a nation."
President Fox was saying that the
construction of his nation is taking place
-- inside our nation. Is that not sedition?
In 2005, the head of the Institute of
Mexicans Abroad, Carlos Gutierrez, asserted,
"The Mexican nation goes beyond the borders
that contain Mexico."
What these Mexicans politicians are saying
is that Mexico extends into the United
States, and the first loyalty of all men and
women of Mexican ancestry is, no matter
where they live, to Mexico.
Mexico's rulers believe in a nation of
history, blood and soil that pre-existed,
and supersedes, any pledge of allegiance any
Mexican may make to another country,
especially to the United States.
Is George W. Bush vaguely aware of any of
this?
At the Quebec summit, Bush mocked the idea
of a merger of a North American Union as a
fantasy of conspiracy theorists. "It's quite
comical actually, to realize the difference
between reality and what some people on TV
are talking about."
Calderon laughed it off, too. "I'd be happy
with one foot in Mexicali and one in
Tijuana." But in his state of the nation,
Felipe is talking about one foot in Mexico
and one in Los Angeles.
Is Bush oblivious to what his friend Vicente
Fox laid down in Madrid in 2002 as the
long-term strategy of Mexico?
"Eventually, our long-range objective is to
establish with the United States ... an
ensemble of connections and institutions
similar to those created by the European
Union, with the goal of attending to future
themes as important as ... the freedom of
movement of capital, goods, services and
persons. The new framework we wish to
construct is inspired in the example of the
European Union."
Fox is talking about the erasure of borders.
Whether Bush is aware of this really makes
no difference. For the real issue is not
what the Mexican regime has in mind, but

estimates based on data collected from prisons, news reports and independent

as of last week were at about 3,300. Total U.S. troop deaths in Afghanistan,

But the carnage wrought by illegal alien murderers
represents only a fraction of the pool of blood spilled by American citizens
as a result of an open border and un-enforced immigration laws.

As the number of illegal aliens in the U.S. increases,
so does the number of American victims.
1) According to Edwin Rubenstien,
president of ESR Research Economic Consultants, in Indianapolis in 1980,
federal and state correctional facilities held fewer than 9,000 criminal
aliens. But at the end of 2003, approximately 267,000 illegal aliens were
incarcerated in all U.S. jails and prisons.

While the federal government doesn't track illegal
alien murders, illegal alien rapes or illegal alien drunk driving deaths,
it has studied illegal aliens incarcerated in U.S. prisons.
In April 2005, the Government Accountability Office
released a report on a study of 55,322 illegal aliens incarcerated in federal,
state, and local facilities during 2003. It found the following:
1) The 55,322 illegal aliens studied
represented a total of 459,614 arrests some eight arrests per illegal alien;
2) Their arrests represented a total
of about 700,000 criminal offenses some 13 offenses per illegal alien;
3) 36 percent had been arrested at
least five times before.
[SIDEBAR: DO THE MATH . . . admitted, these are high-end numbers, but if that
study was only 55,322 of them, and there are now between 300,000 and 400,000
wetbacks in JAIL, let alone arrested, then the number of criminal offenses
committed by ARRESTED wetbacks is between the known 700,000 and estimated
5,000,000! Further, that usually means that only 1/2 or 1/3 of them are actually
arrested; so then, anywhere from the known 700,000, extrapolated to the low-end
1,400,000, to a staggering high-end estimation that as many as 12,000,000
criminal offenses may have been committed by illegal wetbacks in America.
